Art is in the air!

Art is in the air!

It’s here. Two thousand and seventeen. For an arty kick-off of the year, we’ve prepared a list of our favorite upcoming exhibitions in Lisbon and Porto. Art is in the air!

We wind back to the early years of the 20th century to discover the inspiring works of one of the most amazing Portuguese avant-garde painters: Amadeo de Souza-Cardoso (1887-1918). After the huge success of the Paris show,  held at the Grand Palais in 2016, now it’s Lisbon’s turn to show the exceptional work of Amadeo. The MNAC holds a temporary exhibition which recreates Amadeo’s first solo show in the capital, held a century ago. A contemporary of Amadeo de Souza-Cardoso, Almada Negreiros, one of the leading figures of Portuguese Modernism, is at the center of an anthological show at Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian, running from February 2 to June 5. In this much-awaited retrospective, with the subtitle “A way of being modern”, visitors will be able to immerse in the avant-gardian universe of an artist whose career spanned the entire 20th century. Culturgest, one of the leading art centers in Lisbon, now under a new curatorial signature, will feature two exhibitions focusing on Portuguese contemporary artists.  In the Belém area, Museu Berardo and Maat (Museum of Art, Architecture and Technology) are also playing their cards with exciting new programs for 2017.
In Porto, Serralves, the city’s iconic contemporary art museum, will welcome the first solo show of French artist Philippe Parreno in Portugal, “A Time Couloured Space”. The project by Álvaro Siza Vieira for the complex of Alhambra, Granada, will be the theme of a top-quality architecture exhibition in Serralves.
Happy 2017 and may this year be a very good year!

Lisbon, Ibero-American Capital of Culture 2017:This year, the city of Lisbon is proud to host another stirring event as the Ibero-American Capital of Culture. This initiative fosters cultural dialogue between artists and the people of the Iberian Peninsula and the Americas. The program kicks-off in January and will bring to Lisbon over 150 activities involving hundreds of artists, producers, teachers and publicists, with exhibitions, concerts, conferences and cinema.

Shopping is culture:  You can learn a lot about a city through its historic and remarkable shops. Lisbon still has a lot of commercial gems to explore, both traditional and new, especially in the historic districts of Baixa and Chiado. From the world’soldest bookstore, to traditional tea and coffee purveyors, to new concepts which celebrate the spirit of Portuguese craftsand design, there are plenty of good shopping ideas to browse, while keeping the cultural heritage alive.

Bespoke Olive Oils:
Along with cork, olive oil is one of Portugal’s most characteristic and appreciated products. It’s produced from north to south, and especially in the region of Alentejo, where some of the finest olive oils originate. Dive deep into this authentic, rich culture, and learn about all the phases of the process, from harvesting to a visit to a traditional or state-of-the-art olive oil mill, with sampling of some bespoke olive oils, by planning a tailor-made tourwith Episode Travel with Art.

What our friends and clients are saying about us:

“A very warm ‘thank you’ for making our inaugural visit to Lisbon such a great success. We all enjoyed ourselves so much and everything went really well. When we repeat the visit to Lisbon, all I would do is to add an extra day as there is so much else to see that we did not have time to fit in.”
